Revitalizing You

Why Weight Matters

Obesity is a major risk factor for the development of many significant health problems.

 I. Type 2 Diabetes:

  • Obesity, Insulin Resistance, and β-cell dysfunction are significant contributing risk factors for the future development of Type 2 Diabetes.
  • As the body consistently has elevated glucose levels, the pancreas is forced to release more and more insulin. This can lead to the development of insulin resistance, which can lead to the future development of Type 2 Diabetes. Insulin resistance also makes it increasingly difficult to lose weight, especially abdominal adiposity, which is also known as “visceral fat,” which leads to the development of Type 2 Diabetes and Cardiovascular disease.
  •

II. High Blood Pressure (AKA Hypertension):

Obesity can result in elevated blood pressure in many ways, such as:

  • Insulin Resistance:
    • Obesity can lead to insulin resistance, which increases the risk of developing high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease.
    • Chronic and Acute Inflammation:
      • Obesity can cause increased inflammatory responses, increasing the risk of elevated blood pressure (joint and connective tissue dysfunction, too).
    • Cardiovascular Disease/Carotid Artery Disease:
      • Obesity can increase the thickness of the carotid arteries, which forces the heart to pump harder, which can lead to increased blood pressure.
    • Elevated Serum Glucose Levels (AKA Hyperglycemia):
      • Obesity can cause elevated glucose levels in the blood, which is also known as hyperglycemia. Hyperglycemia is a known cause of elevated blood pressure.

III. High Cholesterol (AKA Hyperlipidemia):

  • Being overweight increases the amount of fatty tissue in the body. This excessive amount of fatty tissue can cause the body to produce more triglycerides and LDL (bad or “lousy” cholesterol) and less HDL (good or “happy” cholesterol). LDL is the “sticky” cholesterol that sticks to the walls of arteries and causes heart attacks and strokes.
  • Insulin Resistance and Chronic/Acute Inflammation can increase the amount of free fatty acids in the liver and can affect how the body manages HDL and other lipoproteins resulting in increased cholesterol levels.

IV: Cancer:

  • Obesity can lead to the development of several cancers, such as breast, colon, esophageal, stomach, and endometrial.
    • The causes are multifactorial, but Obesity is absolutely a contributing factor.

** The list goes on, including Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Strokes, Joint Problems (including Osteoarthritis, back, hip, and knee pain), Breathing Problems, Mental Illness (including Clinical Depression and Anxiety), Digestive problems (including reflux and gallstones), Urinary Incontinence, Erectile Dysfunction, and Infertility.

** Diet, Exercise, Weight Loss, Lifestyle Modification, and Pharmacotherapy (the use of Anti-Obesity Medications), when indicated and appropriate, is the gold standard of care for ALL of these health problems.
